Emirates Biotech and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) are collaborating on a research project to design, construct, and operate the UAE’s inaugural integrated organic-waste valorisation pilot plant. The project aims to transform mixed food waste streams, which include compostable packaging, into renewable biogas and nutrient-rich compost. The partnership was launched at UAE University in Al Ain, in the presence of key stakeholders from various value chains.

The pilot plant, strategically located near the UAEU campus in Al Ain, has the capacity to process up to 40kg of organic waste daily. The project’s primary focus is to develop technical and operational guidelines that will support the potential expansion of this model in the UAE and beyond.

In the UAE, food waste constitutes a significant portion of daily municipal solid waste, accounting for nearly 40%. A substantial amount of this waste is disposed of in landfills. Traditional plastic packaging heavily contaminated with food residues presents challenges in terms of recycling. The project seeks to explore the possibility of processing food waste and compostable packaging together, thereby recovering valuable resources and effectively diverting waste from landfills.

Dr. Rami, Associate Provost for Research, UAEU stated, “We believe that solving societal and environmental challenges requires strong collaboration between academia and industry. Our partnership with Emirates Biotech demonstrates how research and innovation can be translated into practical, scalable solutions that support the UAE’s sustainability goals.”

“This integrated pilot project will evaluate a practical end-of-life pathway for food waste and compostable packaging, while supporting the UAE’s circular economy, food security and Net Zero ambitions. It will also provide a platform for training students and researchers and strengthening local capability in waste-to-resource technologies,” said Professor Zafar Said Sher, UAEU project lead.

The pilot plant will combine anaerobic digestion and composting to generate renewable biogas and nutrient-rich compost. Over the 2-year project, researchers will assess the performance, environmental, and economic viability of this integrated process. Installation and commissioning are expected to be completed by August 2027.

Students and researchers will actively participate in the project, gaining practical research experience and technical training. Additionally, a laboratory-scale assessment will explore the potential of converting the biogas into renewable hydrogen, the statement noted.

“The project will demonstrate a novel integrated biorefinery concept for organic waste management in the UAE. Anaerobic digestion will convert organic waste into renewable biogas, with the potential for upgrading to green hydrogen. The resulting digestate will undergo composting to produce nutrient-rich compost. Successful regional validation could be a game changer for organic waste diversion and circularity, while demonstrating the role of compostable packaging as an enabler,” explained Dr. Aman Kulshrestha, Chief Technology Officer of Emirates Biotech.

If successfully scaled, an integrated organic waste valorisation plant could potentially reduce CO₂ emissions by 89% compared to landfilling, the statement said.

By generating validated technical evidence, the project aims to provide a scalable and modular roadmap for transforming food waste and compostable packaging into renewable biogas and compost. This approach supports the UAE’s long-term waste management, circular economy, and sustainability goals, it concluded.

Etihad Rail and AD Ports Group have collaborated to launch a new direct rail service connecting Fujairah Terminals with the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD). The integrated inland logistics rail depot solution links one of the UAE’s main East Coast maritime gateways on the Gulf of Oman with the nation’s major industrial zones in Abu Dhabi. It combines a new dedicated rail freight service and a customs enabled inland cargo gateway designed to bring trade closer to customers.

Developed in partnership with AD Ports Group, Etihad Rail said it is extending the reach of Fujairah Terminals beyond the port gates. It enables cargo arriving in Fujairah to be transported directly by rail 200km to ICAD, where customers can access customs clearance, inspection, and cargo release services. A significant milestone in this launch is the designation of ICAD with its own UN Locode AECAD, establishing it as a recognised international logistics location within global shipping and trade systems. For the first time, shipping lines, freight forwarders, and cargo owners can book cargo directly to ICAD as the destination and clearance point, said a statement.

Combined with dedicated customs and inspection infrastructure, this enables containers arriving at Fujairah Terminals to be transported directly by rail to ICAD for inspection, clearance, and release. This simplifies customs processes, reduces handling requirements, and accelerates the movement of goods across Abu Dhabi.

The solution is designed to serve importers, exporters, manufacturers, distributors, and logistics providers operating across Abu Dhabi, allowing them to receive cargo closer to warehouses, production facilities, and end markets, it added.

On the strategic deal, Etihad Rail Freight CEO Omar Alsebeyi said, “The launch of our new Fujairah-ICAD rail service represents another important step in unlocking the full potential of the UAE National Rail Network for our customers. Through our partnership with AD Ports Group, we have created an innovative logistics solution that goes beyond transportation by bringing key port services closer to where cargo is ultimately needed. By combining rail connectivity with customs-enabled inland cargo handling and the ability to book cargo directly to ICAD, we are helping customers move goods more efficiently, simplify logistics processes, and reduce the time between vessel arrival and final delivery.”

The new service offers customers reliable schedules, reduced road congestion, enhanced scalability for high-volume cargo movements and lower carbon emissions compared with traditional long-haul trucking. Operating 3-times per week, the dedicated Etihad Rail service connects Fujairah Terminals with ICAD, strengthening multimodal cargo flows across the corridor.

AD Ports Group (Ports Cluster), CEO, Saif Al Mazrouei noted, “Strong trade corridors are built by connecting gateways with the industrial and commercial ecosystems they serve. The integrated service brings together Fujairah Terminals, Etihad Rail and ICAD as part of a more connected system, extending the reach of our port infrastructure beyond the terminal and bringing essential services closer to customers. Through our partnership with Etihad Rail, we are enabling seamless, reliable and resilient cargo flows, while providing businesses with greater flexibility in how they access markets and manage their supply chains. This seamless approach strengthens connectivity across the trade ecosystem, supports long-term growth and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a gateway of choice for trade and industry.”

The launch of the service underscores the shared commitment of Etihad Rail and AD Ports Group to bolstering the UAE’s logistics and trade infrastructure by enhancing connectivity, fostering innovation, and delivering customer-centric supply chain solutions.

The partnership leverages the capabilities of Fujairah Terminals, the extensive reach of the UAE National Rail Network, and an inland gateway equipped with customs and cargo handling services. This aims to establish a more efficient and resilient logistics ecosystem, catering to businesses operating across the nation, the statement concluded.

Luxury real estate developer Dar Global said it is reinforcing its commitment to the region’s fastest-growing real estate markets by showcasing its residential portfolio across Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Following an exclusive Dubai preview presenting the developer’s latest opportunities to top brokers and investors, Dar Global said it is expanding access to its premier project pipeline as both Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The move is said to solidify both countries’ standings as leading global real estate destinations, driven by historic economic reforms, massive infrastructure investment, and modernised foreign ownership frameworks.

Ziad El Chaar, CEO of Dar Global said: “Following our engagement with leading brokers and investors, we are seeing immense appetite for luxury residences and second homes across Saudi Arabia and Qatar. In Saudi Arabia alone, buyers from 59 nationalities have already invested with us – demonstrating that global buyers are actively betting on the Kingdom’s trajectory even before foreign ownership zones are fully finalised.”

“What makes Saudi Arabia fundamentally unique is its US $160bn domestic market, giving international investors a built-in airbag, while Qatar’s world-class infrastructure and residency incentives continue to draw high-net-worth global citizens. Our developments across Riyadh, Jeddah, and Doha offer investors turnkey, world-class branded real estate in the region’s most dynamic growth corridors,” he explained.

In Saudi, historic real estate reforms have opened property ownership to non-Saudis under a structured digital framework, with the announcement of designated zones viewed as a major catalyst for international market entry. The Kingdom is said to offer a unique structural advantage: a deep organic domestic market supported by national housing targets and long-term population growth, alongside no personal income tax, property-linked residency for investments over $1mn, and a US Dollar-pegged currency, the statement explained.

Discussing Qatar, the developer said the country is driving international demand through designated foreign ownership zones and attractive real estate residency programmes (golden visas), granting foreign buyers multi-year or permanent residency, 0% capital gains tax, and full capital repatriation within landmark masterplans led by Qatari Diar.

Dar Global’s expanding regional footprint features 3-benchmark luxury destinations across both markets. Within Riyadh’s exclusive Diriyah, Wadi Safar district, the developer is progressing Rayana, offering Mansions and branded Trump Mansions the project’s strategic location is near King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) and Expo 2030 corridors, the statement noted.

Meanwhile, Trump Plaza Jeddah anchors the Amaya development on King Abdulaziz Road, introducing Trump Park Residences, Trump Executive Residences, and Townhouses alongside a members-only Vitality Club. Across Qatar, Dar Global is advancing Trump International Golf Club Simaisma, in the heart of the capital Doha, featuring ultra-luxury golf and beachfront villas within Qatari Diar’s 8m sqm Simaisma masterplan alongside a 650,000sqm theme park ‘Land of Legends’ and 3-hotels and a yacht marina, it concluded.

UAE-based developer Eagle Hills and the Government of Maldives have signed a commercial terms agreement for the development of the Maldives Waterfront and Marina. The project is billed as a major new integrated island destination in the Ras Malé area, and is said to be one of the most ambitious development initiatives in the country’s history.

According to a statement by Eagle Hills, the commercial terms agreement sets out the shared vision and principal commercial terms of the project, with detailed terms to be developed as the project progresses.

With an overall development scale envisioned in the region of US $12bn over its various phases, the project represents a transformational long-term vision for the Maldives, the statement said.

Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Eagle Hills said, “The Maldives is a truly special place, with unmatched beauty and global appeal. Our ambition is to build responsibly on that strength and create something truly world-class.”

The project is envisioned as a world-class global tourism, waterfront and marina destination, and aims to bring together international hospitality, premium residences, branded residences, a world-class marina, waterfront leisure, retail, dining, entertainment, wellness, education, healthcare and community facilities within an integrated destination.

H.E. Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Maldives added, “In Eagle Hills and its Chairman, Mohamed Alabbar, the Maldives has a partner whose record speaks for itself — from the making of Downtown Dubai to Belgrade Waterfront and destinations across 3-continents, few names in global real estate carry the same authority in building city-scale destinations from the ground up. That is the calibre of partnership we have secured for Ras Malé.”

The project builds on the extraordinary strength of the Maldives brand. Recognised around the world for its natural beauty, exceptional hospitality and unique island experience, the Maldives has established a position few destinations can replicate. The development will build on this legacy, complementing its globally renowned resort sector with a new generation of waterfront living, hospitality and marina experiences, the statement said.

At its heart will be an internationally significant destination where hotels and resorts, premium residences, branded residences, marina experiences, waterfront promenades, dining, retail, wellness and entertainment come together around the water. Education, healthcare, community infrastructure and high-quality public spaces will complete an integrated environment combining tourism, residential life and year-round economic activity. Properties within the destination will be offered through a long-term leasehold framework under Maldivian law, with terms of up to 99-years. Upon each transfer, whether through sale or inheritance, a new leasehold term of up to 99-years will commence, providing lasting continuity for owners across generations, it added.

Eagle Hills said that the development is expected to broaden the Maldives’ tourism offering, and will create new reasons to visit, stay longer, return and invest, while attracting new international visitor segments and further strengthening the country’s position as one of the world’s most desirable tourism and lifestyle destinations.

Responsible development and environmental stewardship will guide the project from planning through delivery. The masterplan will respond carefully to the Maldives’ unique relationship with the ocean and its sensitive island environment, embedding sustainability, resilient infrastructure and protection of the natural setting throughout, the statement explained.

The project will be developed on reclaimed land, with no further dredging to be undertaken by Eagle Hills. Independent marine monitoring will accompany construction as the project progresses, helping ensure the development remains sensitive to the waters and natural environment that define the Maldives, it added.

Dr. Muththalib added, “For the Maldives, this is the largest investment programme in our history — billions of dollars of foreign investment moving through our banking system, creating jobs, homes for Maldivian families, and direct revenue to the State from every sale, achieved without tax giveaways and without government borrowing.”

The Maldives Waterfront and Marina is projected to establish a major new platform for sustained foreign investment in the Maldives. The expected inflow of international capital will underpin long-term value creation across the Maldivian economy. The wider activity generated by the development is also expected to create significant tax contributions and stimulate growth across hospitality, construction, retail, marine services, technology and other sectors.

Over its lifetime, the project is expected to create significant direct and indirect employment opportunities. This activity will open new career pathways for Maldivians, strengthen local supply chains and create sustained demand for local businesses, suppliers and professional services, helping retain a greater share of the economic value created within the Maldives, the statement said.

By bringing tourism, hospitality, residential communities and enterprise together, Maldives Waterfront and Marina aims to translate international investment into lasting economic value for the Maldives and its people, while establishing an exceptional waterfront and marina destination worthy of the country’s extraordinary international standing, it continued.

“Most importantly, this project establishes a structured, world-class real estate sector for the Maldives — a new pillar of our economy standing alongside tourism. It is a decisive step on our path to becoming a high-income country by 2040,” Dr. Muththalib concluded.
